Description

Cynara scolymus

Variety: Imperial Star F1

This variety of artichoke produces fruit in the first year. Typically 6-8 green buds will form, averaging 10cm in diameter on a bushy plant. If planting more than one artichoke, space the plants 1-1.2 metres or more apart.

Artichokes grow best in full sun and prefer a well-drained and fertile soil. Good drainage is important to prevent the roots from rotting, especially in areas where they will be overwintered. However, the soil must also be able to retain water long enough to allow the roots to take it in during hot summers.

Water frequently and deeply, 1 to 3 times a week. This will keep flower buds fleshy and tender and develop a strong root system that will keep the plants upright.

Harvest the buds for eating before they develop into thistle flowers.

Ready for transplanting now.

Treat as an annual – i.e. plan to grow fresh plants next year.
